Patients don't only Google "dentist near me" anymore. They ask ChatGPT "who's the best dentist in Ithica for implants?" and get a short list of names back. If your practice isn't on that list, you're not in the conversation.
The work of earning those recommendations has two names you'll hear a lot:
Here's the part most agencies won't tell you: dental GEO and AEO are built on the same foundation as good dental SEO. This guide covers what that foundation looks like and the few ChatGPT-specific steps worth taking.
When a patient asks ChatGPT for a dentist, it usually searches the web in real time rather than answering from memory. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and that it draws on its own crawler and third-party search providers.
In other words, ChatGPT reads the same web your patients do: your website, your listings, your reviews, and what other sites say about you. It then summarizes what it finds.
Google has said the same thing about its own AI features. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI states that AEO and GEO are still SEO, because AI Overviews and AI Mode run on Google's normal ranking systems.
So AI search for dentists rewards the practices that are easiest to understand and easiest to trust online.
This is the one truly ChatGPT-specific step, and it takes five minutes.
OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for ChatGPT search. If your site's robots.txt file blocks it, your pages can't be summarized or cited. Some website platforms and security plugins block AI crawlers by default, so check it.
There's a second crawler, GPTBot, which is used for training OpenAI's models, not for search. You can block GPTBot if you'd rather your content not be used for training, and still appear in ChatGPT search, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
While you're there, confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console too. A page search engines can't reach won't show up in any AI answer.
AI tools cross-check what they read. Your practice name, address, phone number and hours should match exactly on your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps and dental directories. If you've rebranded or moved, hunt down the old listings. Conflicting details make it harder for ChatGPT to be confident about you.
When ChatGPT recommends a dentist, it often summarizes what patients say. A steady flow of recent reviews on Google, plus at least one other platform, gives it more to work with. Ask happy patients for reviews that mention the treatment they had, like "my implant" or "my emergency visit."
Answer engine optimization for dentists comes down to this: when a patient asks a question, your site should have a clear answer. Do you take Delta Dental? Do you see children? What does a crown cost with financing? Can I get a same-day emergency appointment? Put these answers on your service, location and patient info pages in plain language, under clear headings.
Google's guide says AI features favour unique, experience-based content over common knowledge. "5 tips for whiter teeth" is everywhere already. What's yours alone: how your doctors handle anxious patients, what an implant consultation at your office looks like, which technology you use and why. That's the content that gets cited.
Give each doctor a page with a real photo, credentials, education, the procedures they perform and the locations they work at. These pages tell any AI tool that qualified, real people stand behind the care, and they give ChatGPT a specific answer when a patient asks about a particular dentist.
Run a baseline test. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions your patients ask: "best dentist for implants in [city]," "emergency dentist open Saturday near [neighbourhood]," "family dentist in [city] that takes [insurance]." Write down who gets recommended and what's said about you. Repeat monthly.
Track ChatGPT traffic in GA4. OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links clicked in ChatGPT, so you can see those visits in Google Analytics as long as OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked.
Watch Google's AI features in Search Console. Google recommends its Generative AI performance report for seeing how your site appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Ask new patients. Add "ChatGPT or AI search" as an option on your new-patient form. It's the only number that tells you whether AI visibility is turning into booked appointments.
There's no secret trick to ranking a dental practice in ChatGPT. AI search recommends the practices that are clear, consistent and clearly trusted by real patients. The practices doing local SEO properly are already most of the way there.
